During the International Congress of the Italian Dental Association (AIO), held from 8-10 June, 2023 in Chia, Sardegna, in Italy a session will be dedicated to an important part of our dental team, the dental hygienist.
Dental hygienists are key team players in preventing oral disease and helping patients to maintain good oral and general health. Holding a congress without them would be unthinkable! On Saturday, June 10th, from 9am to 2pm, during the Italian Dental Association 12th International Congress a special session will be dedicated to them and their unique role in helping to detect sleep respiratory disorders, the treatment of peri-implantitis and patient communication. Being such important topics, dentists are also invited to attend.
The morning part of the Hygienist Session will focus on obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The session will be presided by Nicola Valente from the University of Cagliari, Italy and will be opened by Marzia Segù, Past President of the Italian Society of Sleep Medicine (SIMSO), the Italian Society of TMJ Disfunction and Pain (SIDA) and researcher at the University of Parma, Italy with her lecture “Sleep, snoring and OSAS”. She will discuss concepts related to the physiology of sleep illustrating the most common signs and symptoms of sleep respiratory disorders, such as snoring and bruxism and the key role that the dentist and dental hygienist play in detecting these disorders. Indications and methods of the use of mandibular advancement devices (MAD) and periodontal implications of OSAS will also be explained.
Her lecture will be followed by Edoardo Manfredi, associate professor at the University of Parma, Italy who will speak on mandibular advancement devices in the management of OSAS and Chiara Camorali, contract professor in the Dental Hygiene course at the University of Parma, Italy who will discuss the relationship between periodontitis and obstructive sleep apnea.
Following the break, Maria Gabriella Grusovin, Swedish specialist in Periodontology and Implants, formerly Professor at the Universities of Manchester, England and Vita e Salute San Raffaele in Milan, Italy will update participants on the current strategies in the treatment of peri-implantitis. The session will be end with the lecture by Jasna Chiara Niciforovic, academic and hygienist, professor of Psychological Approach to the Patient at the San Raffaele University, Milan Italy who will discuss how improvement in the quality of communication enhances clinical performance.
